Keep Sunday holy so God will bless us again

Remember when on every Friday, downtown High Street had lights glistening, people shopping, going to the A&P store for their Eight O’Clock coffee and shopping at the Green Giant? Everyone was so happy, go-lucky, speaking to each other with respect. We were able to shop on High Street for clothes, home goods — just about anything that was needed. Millville had a skating rink and two movie houses. We would go to the People’s Theaterfor Western movies and family-type movies and on Sunday mornings. Do you remember families getting together and going to the church of their choice? Wow, they were some good memories.

After church we would change our clothes and go to Grandmom’s house for some food and after then the men would play penny poker and the children would play bingo. Grandmom would have little bags of candy for the winners. God blesses our country and our towns: factories were thriving, no crime, a great city to live in.

Do you remember what happened next? The malls came to town, people left their friendly mom-and-pop stores to go to the big mall and slowly the mom-and-pop stores had to close — no more every Friday and Saturday downtown at Millville.

Also, the city leaders lifted the curfew and the bars were allowed to be open on a Sunday. Some people stopped their get-togethers after church and went to their favorite restaurant, shopping malls or the bar to watch the football or baseball games.

I believe we have moved ahead and left God behind. Our factories are closing, stores are going out of business, restaurants are closing. Wonder why? God asked us to remember the Sabbath and to keep it holy. We have six days to do “whatever,” but the seventh should be to honor our Lord and savior.

If we remember the Sabbath and keep it holy, God will bless our country and our town. What do you think?

Do you remember when we would hear Kate Smith sing “God Bless America”? Wow, what a good feeling! And also we heard that and “The Battle Hymn of Republic” a lot more than we hear them today. The only drugs that we would hear about was aspirin and Anacin.

I heard a young man preach the other say and the topic was “Did God leave us and we didn’t even notice?” Let us give God back his day so we can hear our grandchildren say that God is blessing us again. I saved my Sundays to go shopping and pick up the materials I would need for the week, but after hearing this young man preach, I am trying to change my habits.

Is it going to be easy to give God back his Sunday? No, but is it worth a try for our younger families. We have a huge younger generation in Millville. They need positive directions to follow.

Also, if some of the merchants closed their doors on Sunday they would probably be counting more profits than if they remained open on Sunday. What do you think? Would it be worth trying to hear God bless America again? I understand that some jobs do require their employees to work on Sunday but the people who do not have to work on a Sunday, let us honor God’s day and ask for his blessing.
