Elton John Thinks Pope Francis Is Just ‘Wonderful’

Elton John is all praises for Pope Francis! The celebrated pop star said in an interview with Sky News that the Pope is “wonderful” and that his progressive statements are a good example of his humanity. John added that the Pope was a sign of hope.

Pope Francis, who has been observed to be significantly more progressive than the previous popes, and has become more accepting of the LGBT community than his conservative predecessor Pope Benedict XVI, is gaining a new brand of fame among gays and lesbians. Elton John, for one, did not delay with his kind and praising words for the Pope. Elton said:

“He’s excited me so much by his humanity and taking everything down to the humility of faith…it’s all basically about love and taking everybody in inclusiveness.”

Elton further added that Jesus Christ himself would be tolerant of gay and lesbian people and that he would be on board with same-sex marriage.

“If Jesus Christ was alive today, I cannot see him… saying this could not happen. He was all about love and compassion and forgiveness and trying to bring people together and that is what the Church should be about.”

It is not the first time Elton John commented on Jesus Christ. In 2010, John earned some backlash after he declared Jesus to be a “super-intelligent gay man,” according to ABC News. This statement unsurprisingly angered conservative Christians, who found John’s comments blasphemous and disrespectful.

According to Yahoo News, Elton John had been itching to talk with Russian president Vladimir Putin regarding gay rights and the rising anti-gay atmosphere in Russia. Elton said:

“I may not achieve anything but I have to try. There are so many people out there living a life of hell. As long as I’m alive I will fight for people’s rights.”

Earlier this year, Putin commented that Elton John has a huge and impressive following “despite his orientation.”

Last March, Time reported that the Pope was evaluating his stance regarding civil unions. Although Catholic support for gay marriage is still uncertain at best, progressive communities are celebrating the fact that the head of one of the largest religious organizations on Earth is actively trying to incorporate equality into the age-old traditional morals of the Roman Catholic church.
