Sinkhole in Crimea Kills 6, Including Two Toddlers; Two More Children Seriously Injured

Six people traveling in one car were killed instantly when an enormous sinkhole opened up along a road in Crimea, police say.

The incident occurred Saturday night when a 26-foot-wide span of roadway suddenly collapsed into the Earth, according to the International Business Times UK. The car's driver, 34-year-old Ibrail Eskandarov, tried to stop the car before it reached the 65-foot-deep hole, but couldn't do it in time, the report added.

In all, six of the eight people riding in the car were killed by the fall, the Daily Mail reported. Two of the deceased were Eskandarov's three-year-old twins, the report added.

The sinkhole opened up along a highway between Simferopol and the village of Nikolaevka, Crimea's Emergency Ministry press service told RT.com. The report also said the survivors of the accident are a one-year-old boy, who is in a coma after suffering a major brain injury, and a 12-year-old girl, who has multiple fractures.

Officials are now investigating why the sinkhole suddenly appeared, according to Yahoo! News.
