Pope Francis recently visited the Blue Mosque during his three day visit to Turkey. While there, he bowed his head and prayed in the direction of Mecca.

The Pope also told Turksih President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and other political leaders in a speech during his trip that fanaticism and fundamentalism “need to be countered by the solidarity of all believers.”

Further, he said:

“It is essential that all citizens – Muslim, Jewish and Christian – both in the provision and practice of the law, enjoy the same rights and respect the same duties. They will then find it easier to see each other as brothers and sisters who are travelling the same path, seeking always to reject misunderstandings while promoting cooperation and concord. Freedom of religion and freedom of expression, when truly guaranteed to each person, will help friendship to flourish and thus become an eloquent sign of peace.”

Turkish President Erdogan has said that there is no such thing as moderate Islam and that “The mosques are our barracks, the domes our helmets, the minarets our bayonets, and the faithful our soldiers.”

On his trip, Pope Francis called for more open borders between Europe and predominately Islamic countries.

Pope Francis said, while returning from his trip, that equating Islam with violence is wrong and that Muslim leaders should issue a global condemnation of terrorism.
