Jeb Bush Says Catholic Dogma Trumps US Government

Theocracy Alert: In an ominous speech announcing his 2016 presidential campaign, Jeb Bush promised if elected president he would favor Catholic dogma over the courts, the law, and the U.S. government.

The former Florida Governor declared his official entry into the 2016 presidential race earlier today while speaking to a cheering crowd at Miami Dade College.

Speaking about Little Sisters of the Poor, a Catholic charity that refused to obey the law and adopt Obamacare because Catholic teaching opposes contraception and medical treatments that may cause sterility or abortion, Bush declared:

If it comes down to a choice between the Little Sisters and Big Brother, then I’m going with the Sisters.

Bush made his remarks in support of Catholic dogma and against the U.S. government while attacking Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton, who recently declared that deep seated religious beliefs must be changed if social justice is to be achieved and the promise of the U.S. Constitution fulfilled.

Declaring his support for a Catholic charity over the laws of the U.S. government is not the first alarming statement coming from the presidential hopeful. Last month Bush declared “a tolerant country” should allow Christians to discriminate against gays.

Bush said Christian business owners should be able to deny services to same-sex couples based on their religious beliefs, and when asked if businesses should be able to decline services to same-sex weddings Bush said:

Yes, absolutely, if it’s based on a religious belief.

Also last May, in a significant foreign policy claim, Bush said the “Christian voice” is not heard enough around the world, and implied that it is the U.S. government’s responsibility to be a global evangelist for Christ.

As Florida’s governor, Bush consistently attacked women’s reproductive rights by supporting anti-choice causes, dangerous parental notification laws, and an irresponsible late term abortion ban.

As governor, Bush also championed school choice and tried to protect prayers at public school events.

Announcing his 2016 presidential bid, Bush is shamelessly pandering to the base of the GOP – conservative Christians - as he prepares to compete against a field filled with politicians also intent on courting the same conservative Christian base of the GOP.

Bottom line: Despite his calm and wonkish manner, Bush consistently defends the most oppressive conservative Christian positions, and if elected, he would pose a real threat to the secular values upon which this nation was founded.
