School Board Rules Children Can’t Be Called ‘He And She’

American News | June 23, 2014

A new policy being implemented in several schools in Vancouver, Canada, bans the use of “he” or “she.” Instead, students are being asked to refer to their classmates as “xe” or “xer.”

The goal of the policy is to ensure that students do not feel pressure to maintain gender roles. The school board hopes to encourage students to adopt characteristics of the gender they align with more. The school board asserts that “sex-neutral third-person” pronouns are required in order to be considerate of “gender sensitivities” in the new generation.

Several parents are pushing back on the policy, claiming that it is ridiculous, and that children are qualified to “understand the elements of identity.”

Still, the school moved forward with implementing the policy.
