Thousands flock to Medjugorje for 25th Youth Prayer Festival

As most young people head to the Adriatic coast for sun and sea holidays, tens of thousands of young Catholics attend the Medjugorje Youth Prayer Festival.
The religious pull of the small town of Medjugorje in Bosnia and Herzegovina shows no sign of abating, as up to 80,000 young Catholics descended from all over the world for the Medjugorje International Youth Prayer Festival, a week of prayer and celebration which ends on August 6, 2014.
The strong attendance levels at the festival, now in its 25th year, attracted young Catholics from an estimated 60 countries, and is testament to the increasing popularity of the destination, whose fortunes were transformed in June, 1981, when the Virgin Mary allegedly appeared to six children on a remote hillside close by.
