News Media Pushes for Sunday

Turn it off and tune Him in

East Valley Tribune | August 12, 2014

Welcome to August! As you know, this month ushers in the busyness of the fall. It’s the beginning of school for the kids, football games to watch on the weekends and many fun fall activities. And on top of all that, many of us will be working hard at our jobs during the day, despite the fact that we will oftentimes bring our work home too.

Many times we will overcommit ourselves this fall by signing up or scheduling a ton of activities. And before we know it, time has flown by, it’s November, and we’re exhausted.

As Christians, what could we do this fall to make sure we really tune in to what God wants for our life in the midst of the busyness?

The longest of the commandments is all about the need to take a Sabbath rest. God told them, “Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God” (NIV — Exodus 20:8-10).

Maybe it’s time to start with Sunday as a day you decide to turn off your individual phones, Facebook, TV, iPads, email, or other electronics. Maybe it’s time to turn off the early football game to tune into church first. Maybe let the laundry go till Monday. Practice turning off whatever distracts you from tuning into God’s Word and being more fully present with your family.

But remember that God also made the Sabbath for you to enjoy His creation. Maybe tune in to a hike, old board game, nap, good movie or art project with family or friends. I know one family that celebrates God’s goodness on Sunday night by cooking as a family the best meal of their week. No matter what you turn off once a week, enjoy tuning into God’s grace, mercy and love for you in Jesus the risen Christ.
