A Croundfunding campaign has been launched to “stop Sabbatarians spoiling Sunday swimming” on the Isle of Lewis. The National Secular Society (NSS) is appealing to Scots to help raise £11,400 to pay for a 12-month trial of Sunday opening after councillors ruled out swimming on the Sabbath.

I remember the days when all the shops except the local milk bar were closed on a Sunday. The newsagent and one of the bakeries opened for a couple of hours on a Sunday morning so people could get the paper and buy some bread. Many of my friends belonged to church-going families and it was widely accepted that Sunday was special and set aside for church-going. I remember people talking about keeping the sabbath but I had no idea what it meant. I was to learn later that Sunday, as the Sabbath, was a day of rest for the good of humans and a day for Christian religious observance.

In Switzerland, the churches defend the Sunday Sabbath

The Swiss Churches Working Community (CETC) is calling for the Sunday rest, which it believes it is increasingly threatened. According to Harald Rein, Old Catholic Bishop of Switzerland, "the main problem comes from the tourism lobby", which put pressure increasingly high that the shopping centers located near tourist areas get exemption to open on Sundays reported the news agency APIC. These are often areas of shopping centers highway or near industrial sites, who want to get the same status as stations or airports and therefore introduce Sunday working.
