26,000 Sign Petition to end Catholic University Drag Show
Over 26,000 people have signed a petition calling upon a Roman Catholic university in California to cancel a “hyper-sexualized drag show,” the fifth of its kind at the Catholic-based educational institution.
The University of San Diego is schedule to host its “Celebration of Gender Expression: Supreme Drag Superstar V” on Thursday, April 14 at its Shiley Theatre. The event page on the university website characterizes the show as an “edu-tainment event” that will “teach about the experiences of trans and gender-fluid communities, including the prevalence of violence, while students entertain with light-hearted lip-sync and astounding choreography.”
The event is put on by the university’s PRIDE group, which is an “organization of undergraduate students who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning, pansexual and other identities and/or allies of the LGBTQ community.” The University of San Diego also has other homosexual advocacy groups on campus, such as Queer Women of USD and LGBTIQQ Rainbow Wellness.
Some students who have attended the drag show in the past, an event where men dress as women and vice versa, have expressed concern about its celebration of transgenderism and homosexuality.
